about

Undoubtedly one of the standout artists in 2019 for Opal Tapes. Columbian producer Faunes Efes' Filmmaker project has released a slew of incredible albums and EP's this year. From the streetwise 808-shots of 'Nocturnal' to the striding Neo-Geo EBM of 'The Love Market' and more recently the dank hip-hop strained electro of 'Wetwork'. Each successive release proves Faunes capacity to produce incredibly catchy, body moving music from a small arsenal of honed hardware.

'Unregulated', Filmmakers debut release on Opal Tapes, takes aspects of all the above and injects a dirty shot of live drums, laser-beam electro and urgent Detroit burners. Opener 'Federal Bestiary' honks like a horn to say hello as plodding tin-room drum kit counts off against searchlight synths. Resolutely 'noir' in its approach but with the charm of practice room recordings left to sprout roots into the circuitry of the building. 'Unnatural Sciences' uses the stereo-field to seed mad catchy arp lines like the most perfectly retuned Aux88 bits, strict dark-side boogie.

The extra-ordinary 'Dreamland Ops' chugs away on a perfect sub-100 bass line bit before metallic resonances begin to swallow everything collapsing in a part choral, part AFX styled refocussing of the ear into swollen 3D shapes before all is pulled away to reveal that concrete hard bass line, snare and the burning of rubber wheels. FUCKING SICK. 'Bot Cells' is hard-as-nails electro illuminated by wailing Keytar screech and k-hole voices, shot through with extra-spicy synth to ensure there is zero elbow room available at your local discotheque.
